E3 2011: Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3 Preview
Posted on June 13, 2011 by

One of the big games at E3 was Activision’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3. Infinity Ward has a lot riding on MW3 this time around, due to the internal disputes that have been going on for the past year and not having a presence at last year’s E3. This year, IW and MW3 are riding high on the hype with the teaser trailers showing off different sections of possible battlefields that players will be fighting on in the single player campaign. At the demo event, two sections of the single player campaign were shown: Hunter Killer and Mind the G.

The first mission that was show was Hunter Killer, which puts players in the boots (or fins in this case) of Sgt. Derek “Frost” Westbrook Delta Force. He and his squad link up with a squad of SEALs for a joint operation against a Russian sub that’s about to attack a location unknown to the player. Frost, his squad and the SEALs, travel under what seems to be flooded tunnel with chatter between the two teams going back and forth. The two teams finally come up to their objective, and start to plant C4 charges to force the sub topside. As the C4 blows up the rear rudder and forces the sub to the surface, Frost and the rest of the team goes top side to get ready to board the sub. As Delta Force and the SEALs swim up to board the sub, players are finally show where the sub was going to attack: New York City. Not only was it on its way to bomb the city, there’s a battle in progress in the New York Bay between the invading Russian forces and the combined might of the US Air Force and Navy. Buildings are burning, explosions are happening everywhere, and Lady Liberty is smoldering in smoke. The Delta/SEAL team makes their way into the sub, dispatching all enemies as they locate and find the command area of the sub. Frost and another team member prime the sub’s missiles and lock in the coordinates for the invading fleet. Frost, his team and the SEALs then make a mad dash out of the sub into waiting speedboats, avoiding the cross fire of the Russians and US fighter jets, Russian battle ships trying to ram them and the armament of missiles that they just launched against the fleet into a waiting Chinook.

The second mission, Mind the G, takes the players across the pond in London and into the bootstraps of Sgt. Marcus Burns of the SAS. He and his team get word that a team of guerrillas working with the Russians are planning an attack and the mission is to take the leader alive and extract intel. The teams make their way into a warehouse complex, ending up near the loading docks. With sniper support, Burns and the team start their assault on the enemy held docks. As the guerrillas start to pull back, Burns and the rest of the SAS team give chase, going deeper into the docking area. As they do, the enemy lures them into fire from their comrades and the SAS team calls in for a gunship to help clear the way. They encounter heavier resistance, which forces Burns to call in the gunship again. They finally make their way in and see that the docks lead to subway tunnels. The enemy retreats into the train cart and Burns and his team give chase. The CO of the SAS gives the team new intel saying that the train cart is full of explosives and will be traveling under the House of Lords. Burns, his team and another small team hop into the trucks that were left behind and give chase again. A rolling firefight ensues between the SAS and guerrilla forces as the tunnels start to lead to areas where there are civilians. The CO starts to tell the teams that the train needs to be derailed and stopped quickly before it reaches its destination. The second team of SAS then does something both crazy and heroic at the same time: the team shoots the driver of the train and then proceeds to throw the truck they were riding in front of it causing it to derail.

The Modern Warfare franchise has been known for doing things bigger and better with each new game and Modern Warfare 3 drives that point home. The game is far from done, but it’s already pushing buttons both with its high quality cinematic gameplay and potentially controversial content. With more action, tense fire fights and a story that could be the best in the series, Modern Warfare 3 has many players ready to pick up a copy on November 8.
