At last year’s E3, fans were thrown in a loop when the announcement of Final Fantasy XIV was made. Final Fantasy XIII wasn’t even out at the time and they were already talking about another numbered entry into the series. Well a year had pass and at E3 2010, I had a chance to sit down and finally play a bit of the game. To be honest, I was a bit disappointed with the presentation.
The game looks great, being still in a beta state, what messed it up for me was when the rep giving us a tour around the hub town flipped a switch and asked us to wear 3D glasses. Now I have no problem with 3D if the glasses are bigger than my own, but these were pretty small so I had to put them over my glasses. The effects were pretty cool, the backgrounds popping up, showing more detail, but were just for show. The rep did say that this was all a tech demo and that Square hasn’t made a final decision to use 3D in the final build.
After a long tour of the expansive town hub, I finally got a chance to go into battle. One small problem though. He never told me how to cast a spell. He was explaining the targeting system, the different spells and the different buffs and de-buffs that I was able to use, but he never told me how to cast them. It’s kind of hard to play any game when you don’t know how to even attack. He just kept going on about the battle system, the enemies and new features about the game. Which isn’t bad, but at that moment all I wanted was to know what the attack button was.
Overall the game is coming along pretty good, new jobs classes, more areas to explore and bigger raiding parties with cross platform support between the PS3 and the PC. Maybe it was the presentation, the reps on hand or the 3D effects, but after playing Final Fantasy XIV for a while really left me disappointed. Now an open beta is coming soon to all of those who didn’t register when a copy of FFXIII was purchased. Hopefully playing the beta in the comfort of my home will fill that disappointment, and I’ll finally learn what button is the attack button.
